A student researcher at the high school level may also submit a research paper for evaluation and possible presentation in the Symposium. To participate in the Symposium, a student is not required to have an exhibit on display at the fair, but he/she must conduct primary research as a basis for the paper.

At the City Fair, a student may be selected to represent the Chicago Public Schools at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Exposition held at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. The student may also be selected to represent the Chicago Public Schools at the International Science and Engineering Fair held annually in one of the major cities or possessions of the United States. (The flow chart on the preceding page highlights the steps followed by a student as he/she proceeds from the school level to area, city and state competition.)

Students with language and/or hearing impairments who will present at the City Science Fair are encouraged to seek the assistance of their sponsoring teacher in making arrangements to have a language interpreter or sign language interpreter available during judging sessions. Arrangements for the use of a sign language interpreter can be made through the CPS Office of Specialized Services (553-1800).
